Hesitation Leads to Lost Business

December 20, 2016

The average pit stop for a Formula One car lasts approximately 2.5 to 3.5 seconds. Hesitations, or even simple errors made by a crewmember often mean the difference between winning and losing for the team. The impact of a one-second delay could cost the team millions of dollars in sponsorships and multi-million-dollar contracts for the driver. One man, one error, for 3-seconds of his entire career, could be disastrous for a team made up of hundreds of people working.

Formula One racing isn’t very different than running a business, because hesitations lead to business loss. Who on your team is affected by your delays? Could you imagine losing a bonus or even your job because of a momentary hesitation?

What causes that hesitation?

Lack of Understanding

  • Does your team have a clear goal and does everyone know their role in achieving that goal?

Lack of Confidence in Execution

  • Are your people confident in their role and their ability to accomplish the business goals?

Lack of Passion

  • No one writes books about lukewarm or wayward people. Jump in with both feet on a project, otherwise don’t be surprised when others gladly take your place.

Lack of Tenacity

  • How do you handle yourself under pressure? It is said that a person’s true character is shown amid chaos.

Lack of Trust

  • Do you completely trust the people around you? Would you trust them to step up in your absence and offer the same value you provide?

Lack of Submission

  • Submission to leadership is important in any team. A clear flowing chain of command is one of the most powerful tools a team can have. If a link in the chain is broken, the rest of the team suffers.

Lack of Adaptability

  • Change is inevitable in business and your competitive landscape is constantly evolving. The ability to quickly adapt to market changes is paramount to your success.

The world of business is growing larger and moving more quickly than ever. Like pit crews in racing, every second counts. If the car is scheduled to come in for tires and fuel and the spilled fuel ignites a fire, do you trust your team to put the fire out without hesitation?
